The Reserve Bank said on Tuesday that 98.21 percent of the RS 2000 banknotes were reduced to the banking system, and that only RS 6,366 Crore on such banknotes are still with the public. On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of RS 2000 denomination benches from the circulation.
The total value of RS 2000 banknotes in Omloop, which was 3,56 Lakh Crore at the end of the company on 19 May 2023, was rejected as RS 6,366 Crore at the end of the business community on March 31, 2025, RBI said.
“Thus 98.21 percent of the RS 2000 banknotes in Omloop on 19 May 2023 is sent back,” said it in a statement.
The facility for deposits and/or exchange of the RS 2000 banknotes was available in all bank branches until October 7, 2023. However, this facility is still available at the 19 edition offices of the Reserve Bank.
Since October 9, 2023, RBI offices also accept RS 2000 banknotes from private individuals and entities for deposit on their bank accounts.
Furthermore, members of the public can also send RS 2000 banknotes via India Post from a post office in the country to one of the RBI issue offices for credit on their bank accounts.
The RS 2000 banknotes remain legal tender.
