Income Tax: View the latest list of 29 banks available for e-Pay Tax service

The Income Tax (IT) department has rolled out a new e-Pay Tax service, covering the entire chain of activities related to payment of direct taxes, from generating challan (CRN) to making payment and recording the payment history, is made possible through the e-Filing portal for authorized banks.

Taxpayers are offered a wide range of payment methods, including Net Banking, Debit Card and Pay at the bank counter.

Taxpayers will also be given the option to use RTGS/NEFT and Payment Gateway (Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card & UPI) modes to make payments through banks that are not authorized to collect taxes directly.

To pay using this functionality, Challan (CRN) must be mandatorily created on the e-Pay Tax functionality of the e-Filing Portal.

All payments through authorized banks need to be made through the e-Filing portal only. Taxpayers can make payments through unauthorized banks using NEFT/RTGS and Payment Gateway

What is the process for making tax payments through banks other than authorized ones?

Can a taxpayer change the mode of tax payment after generating Challan?

No. Once a Challan (CRN) is generated, the taxpayer cannot change the mode of payment. However, if the taxpayer wants to pay tax in any other way, a new challan has to be generated and the old challan expires after 15 days.

How does a taxpayer know that the tax payment is successful?

On completion of tax payment, a Challan receipt will be generated. The Challan receipt contains the Challan Identification Number (CIN), BSR Code, payment date and other information. At the same time, the status of the CRN is also updated as paid in the Payment History tab. Taxpayers can download and view the Challan receipt through payment history.
