Do you often use UPI to make your various payments – whether it is about paying your Uber driver, for online shopping or to pay for the road chai? If that is the case, you must have noticed that your UPI app generates a transaction -ID while you transfer the money. These IDs are supposed to be only alphanumeric, but sometimes they can also have special characters.

From 1 February all such transactions that special characters wear by the central system will be rejected, said NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) in a circular.

Al only alphanumeric IDs

The circular of January 9 said that UPI ecosystem players were advised to use only Alfanumeric signs for generating UPI transactions -id. This was done to guarantee compliance with UPI technical specifications.

The National Payment Interface of India pointed out that the issue has been largely resolved, but some of the participants remain non-compliant. Given the criticism of compliance with the specifications, it has been decided not to allow special characters Inupi transaction -ID.

Every transaction with ID with special characters is rejected by the central system.

All participating entities are advised to take cognizance of this and to guarantee compliance.

In particular, payments via UPI have risen quite quickly in recent years, especially since the demonetization in 2016.

The latest data shows that UPI transactions reached a record of 16.73 billion in December 2024. This is eight percent higher than the data of November, which registered 15.48 billion transactions.

In terms of value, December figure stood up £23.25 Lakh Crore, which was considerably higher than £21.55 Lakh Crore in November.

Jumped down deposit fraud

Another news stated that fraudsters UPI users are aiming by making small deposits in their accounts and then using different tactics to mislead them to strengthen larger payment requests.

This was referred to as jump deposit -wang, but NPCI denied it.

“In the light of recent media reports with regard to a new online fraud called ‘Jumped Deposit’ SCAM, we have observed certain inaccuracies and technical discrepancies in these descriptions, which led to unnecessary panic and confusion among users about the UPI platform,” ” said NPCI in a statement.

“Just open an UPI or bank application, a transaction does not automatically approve. Users must explicitly authorize a payment request by entering their UPI -PIN. Without this step, no transaction can be processed, “NPCI clarified.
