Minister of Commerce and the Piyush Goyal industry said that the “incorrect commercial practices” of China are behind the current turbulence in the global economy.
“The starting point of this actually goes back to the start of perhaps 2000 or 3 or 4 years before. When China was admitted as a member of the WTO collective, everyone in the world accepted China as a member of the WTO,” he said during an event in Mumbai on Monday (April 7, 2025).
“Many parts of the world were convinced that China will transform his processes and bring transparency into their economy and will work on fair conditions in the world economy. And we have seen that growth in the last 25-30 years, an almost ruthless growth to become the second largest economy in the world,” the minister said. “But where everyone ditched their eyes, this growth was fed by unfair commercial practices. This growth happened at the expense of fair trade. This growth had his basis for every action that would be inappropriate in the rules of the game,” said Mr. Goyal at the India Global Forum NXT 25 event.
He mentioned China’s unfair commercial practices as the reason behind not allowing BYD to shop in India. “We must be careful with whom we allow to invest in the country. We must be careful with our strategic interests, our safety interests. From now on it’s a no,” he said. Mr. Goyal further said that India would make this challenge a chance and play the game according to the rules, in contrast to countries that resorted predator prices, dumping, unfair work practices and offensive supplies of nations.

Asked if there were any opportunities that China was refuge to dump further after the American rates, he said it was a challenge and advised the industry to “stay informed”.
Speaking of “mutual rates”, Mr. Goyal underlined that India hit fairly low rates on the US “if you look at the United States, for example, while our total rate may be 17%, but many of them are products that we do not import at all. Our applied rate for the United States is probably not pimp,” he said. Applied rate is the actual rate that is charged by a country on the imported goods.
This is Mr. Goyal’s first public statement after the announcement of the American tariff action on India.
