Since the price of chana dal (gram dal) continued to rise ahead of the upcoming festivities, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Wednesday (October 23, 2024) launched the second phase of retail sales of ‘Bharat Chana Dal’ in New Delhi.
The average price of gram dal across India was ₹94.67 per kg on Wednesday, while on the same day in 2023 it was ₹82.58 per kg. Three lakh tonnes Chanamade available from the price stabilization buffer stock will be converted into ‘chana dal‘and’Chana whole’ for retail sale to consumers at a price of ₹70 per kg and ₹58 per kg respectively.
Union Minister for Consumer and Food Affairs Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the sale by flagging mobile vans of various cooperatives under the Union government. The ministry said in a press release that renounced Chanathe government had also expanded the Bharat brand Moon And lentils.
“The Bharat Moong Dal is sold at ₹107 per kg, Bharat Moong Sabut (whole) at ₹93 per kg and Bharat Masur Dal at ₹89 per kg. The resumption of Bharat Chana Dal at this time will increase supply to the consumers of Delhi-NCR this festive season,” the ministry added. Mr Joshi said that direct interventions through retail sales of basic food items such as rice, atta, from and onions have helped maintain a stable price regime.

To increase domestic production and facilitate seamless imports, the Center has allowed duty-free imports should, urad, masur And Chana till March 31, 2025, and import of yellow peas till December 31, 2024. “The improved coverage of Kharif pulses this year, along with continued inflow of imports, has led to a downward trend in the prices of most pulses. The prices of Tur dal, Urad dal, Moong dal and Masur dal have fallen or remained stable in the last three months,” the Center said.
