Cybercrime Tricks: With cybercrime on the rise in the country, India’s largest bank, State Bank of India, has issued an advisory outlining possible ways in which fraudsters can deceive customers.
10 common cybercrime tricks
- TRAI telephone fraud: Some fraudsters may threaten to suspend your mobile services due to allegations of illegal activities or non-compliance with KYC. However, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is not suspending mobile services; only telecom companies can do this.
2. Package stuck at customs: Scammers will call you claiming that a package for you has been stuck in customs because it contains illegal goods. They can demand a fine in connection with this matter.
If you receive a call about a package stuck in customs, provide the number immediately.
3. Digital Arrest: These types of scams have become very common nowadays. In a digital arrest, fraudsters will pose as fake police officers and threaten to interrogate you for fake criminal activity.
Please note that the police do not actually make digital arrests or online interrogations.
4. Family member arrested: Some scammers may demand payment for the arrest of a family member or relative. If you receive a call claiming this, be sure to verify with your family members before taking action.
5. Get rich quick with trading: Various social media advertisements may claim high returns on specific stock investments. Always make sure not to fall for such scams as high return schemes are potential scams.
6. Easy Online Tasks for Big Rewards: Fraudsters can offer large sums of money as rewards for simple tasks. They can then ask for a deposit. Please note that easy money schemes are scams.
7. Lottery in your name: You may receive a text message or email claiming you have won a lottery and asking for account information or a deposit. Avoid or delete such messages or emails as they are scams.
8. Wrong money transfer: You may receive a phone call or message that an incorrect amount has been credited to your account and request a refund. Always check such transactions with your bank before refunding the amount.
9. KTC expired: Some scammers ask for KYC updates via links or phone calls. Please note that banks do not actually call or send links for updates.
10. Generous Tax Refund: Some scammers pose as tax officials and ask for bank details. Always keep in mind that the tax authorities already have your bank details and communicate directly.
